FKL Organization

Establishment

Since its establishment in 2003, the Board and staff have been working diligently-running the Fregenet School and raising awareness about the plight of children in Ethiopia. We started with a commitment to help better the lives of the less privileged Ethiopian children and provide hope for their future. Through the hard work of our dedicated staff and volunteers, as well as the generous support of our donors we opened the doors of the Fregenet School in the fall of 2004, and enrolled 31 students.

FKL selected the site for the school based on a needs assessment study that showed the majority of the population in the area lives well below local standards for poverty.

We have also been successful in receiving full recognition by Ethiopian authorities and in gaining momentum with fund raising activities. This has allowed us to rapidly expand our paid staff and the number of students that we serve. So far, we have exceeded our best expectations. But we are planning for more. Currently and at this nascent stage, the school provides the following services to all 340 children it supports absolutely free of any charge:

  • Education
  • School uniform
  • Stationary items including students’ text books
  • Snacks including milk, tea, biscuits, bread and fruits during morning breaks
  • School Lunch
  • Medical care
  • A Library with computers for students, staff and the surrounding community.
